Once your braces are removed, you will begin the supervised retention phase. Maintaining the results achieved during the treatment phase is key to the success of the entire orthodontic process. Your supervised retention phase will last for a minimum of 12 months. Your final orthodontic result depends on the use of your retainers. It is important to remember that you are not done with your retainers after the supervised retention phase.

"Invisible" (Essix) Retainers

essixOur most common type of retainer is clear plastic and aesthetically pleasing, since it does not require any of the metal wires or clasps of conventional retainers. The material has excellent flex memory, and the snap-in fit ensures that your straight teeth will remain that way – as long as you wear it as directed.

Bonded Retainers

lingualbondedretainerBonded lingual retainers are placed behind the lower anterior teeth from canine to canine. This is one of the best ways to prevent your lower teeth from shifting as it is permanently attached. As with removable retainers, it is important to keep them clean. When brushing, carefully clean the inside of your lower teeth as well as the wire. If your retainer breaks at any time during the retention phase, please do not adjust it yourself. Call us immediately to schedule an appointment.

Hawley Retainers

Hawley_retainerThis "traditional" type of retainer is removable and made of a combination of metal wires and sturdy acrylic, and is designed to keep your teeth in place. This retainer is specially made from impressions of your teeth so that it fits snugly and comfortably in the roof of your mouth, while any wire or acrylic framing keeps your teeth in perfect position. The acrylic can also be personalized with a large number of colors.
